I was thirteen and weighed about one hundred and ten pounds. I got picked on a lot as a kid and didn’t feel like taking it any more. I checked the yellow pages and visited a few schools in the area. Most of the teachers only cared about how you where going to pay for the lessons and never asked me why I felt the need to learn karate. They didn’t care what my reasons for learning or why I was there. Some never even took the time to come off the mat and talk to me themselves; instead he had students come talk to me. I didn’t want to learn from other students, I wanted to learn from the teacher. So after that I talked to some kids in the neighborhood and they told me of a guy who just opened up a school in his basement and lived only a few blocks from my house.So I approached him and asked him if he could teach me how to defend myself. After talking with me for about an hour I knew that I found what I was looking for. A teacher who cared. A person who I knew was going to give me the best instructions that I could ever find. A man who not only would be my instructor, but my friend. That was twenty two years ago. Now I am thirty-three years old and hold a forth degree black belt in Hapkido. I have competed in numerous tournaments and have had numerous victories in the breaking events and at one point was ranked number two in the state of New Jersey in breaking. I am currently a chef at a pharmaceutical company and attend computer school in the evenings. Unfortunately that doesn’t leave a lot of time for training, but I make it up to the school when I can.
I believe that the Karate Institute of Allwood has the best instructors in the area. We will teach you how to survive on the street. We don’t teach Kata, or traditional weapons. We teach you how to use your whole body as a weapon. We also show you how to use everyday objects as weapons. Lets face it, you don’t have sai’s or knives to use on the street .You will more or less be carrying loose change, a comb, or keys. When I think back to when I was a kid looking for a school, it was the best move I made to come and learn from Sensei Doc. So what are you waiting for? Come on down and check us out.
