Articles:   Inspirations and Aspirations

I had begun my training in the martial arts at the age of 12.  At age 12 I didn't have much concern for details.  It's no wonder that I have no recollection of the name of the Instructor (Eric…something?) or the style that I was learning (B…something?).  I had achieved the level of Mid-red belt (equivalent to our yellow) in that mysterious style.  Either way the details are perhaps insignificant.  It was less than a year later when I had begun my studies with Sensei "Doc" Kraweic and the evolving style of Hapkido.  Tucked away in the activity rooms of the Clifton City Boys' Club is where the "karate" classes where held.  Two nights a week I stood witness to men and women black belts performing "superhuman" feats of agility and coordination.  This is what I am going to learn?  I couldn't wait and I would practice day and night, all the basic techniques, of course, and the more advanced ones, time well spent landing on my butt.  Learning progressed for a number of months until the club ran out of space to hold class.  OK, so I packed up my GI and moved to the new location along with some of the other students.  Little did I know then that my life would become the art and the art my life.

Whew!  Fifteen years later here we are thriving stronger than ever Internet and all.  Enough about how I started.  I would like to keep this somewhat short for now.  There are many concepts, beliefs, and experiences that I would enjoy sharing, but there is plenty of time for that later.  Most likely you will find these reflected in my occasional writings.

There is one thing I'd like to say here and it is a statement found in our dojo. The one quality that has the ability to make EVERY learning experience a positive one is this:  "Leave your egos at the door."  Enjoy your training!
